As the leading consumer of energy, all federal agencies have been required to reduce
energy and water consumption, utilize sustainable building design and construction
and reduce fleet vehicle petroleum use by executive order 13423. All new construction
and major renovations of agency buildings must utilize sustainable design and 15%
of existing Federal buildings must incorporate sustainable practices by the year
2015.
This presentation discusses how the selection of material handling equipment and
automated storage and retrieval systems can help companies build sustainable green
buildings or redesign existing buildings to meet green standards. We will start
by defining sustainability using the triple bottom line, also known as the cornerstones
of sustainability: environmental stewardship, social responsibility and economic
prosperity.
We will then review how these cornerstones fit into building design and storage
considerations. Using environmental stewardship we will review how to design more
efficient buildings that require a small carbon footprint. We will also touch on
the importance of building socially responsible buildings that are equitable and
accessible to everyone, regardless of disability. And lastly, we will focus on designing
buildings that meet economic objectives.
With the sustainability movement gaining momentum this session will give you a place
to start… simple things to think about and places to look to green our buildings.
