A new study by KardexRemstar shows how horizontal carousels maximize space savings in a variety of storage and retrieval applications. Horizontal carousels deliver items to the operator rather than shelving and drawer systems require operators to walk and search for items.
For example, a warehouse with 575 sections of shelving has the same storage space as four KardexRemstar horizontal carousels, providing floor space savings of 63.8 percent. This space savings when combined with increased productivity provide a IRR (Internal Rate of Return) often under 18 months.
Carriers or bins are designed to hold several different weights plus the shelves can be spaced as little as one and half inches apart for maximum density, allowing for flexibility in manufacturing, distribution, and/or warehouse atmosphere.
A wide range of shelf options is available to maximize storage density and selectivity, including choices of widths, depths and spacing. Up to three horizontal carousels can be stacked to take advantage of unused overhead space. This compact design of these systems reduces storage space requirements between 40 and 60 percent, recovering floor space for value-added operations.
Horizontal carousels are a system of carriers that rotate on an oval track, delivering stored items to an operator on command. In a system operation, an operator batch picks up to 16 orders simultaneously from three to five integrated carousels called a cluster that is often controlled by inventory management software.
