Pick & Pass Order Fulfillment Provides On-The-Fly Consolidation

3/31/2003
PR Number: P00-131

Pick and pass batch picking and consolidation has been proven over the years to provide one of the most cost effective split case picking methods. Pick and pass order fulfillment allows industries to create a consolidated order while picking them directly into shipping containers or totes.

This methodology is ideal for operations with a large number of SKUs spread over multiple workstations, and orders which typically require only a couple of totes or cartons. The picking operation becomes the consolidation operation. This can avoid most or all downstream consolidation and the associated costly material handling systems, floor space and labor.

Pick and Pass order fulfillment incorporates manual and automated equipment into one dynamic system. Facilities can match throughput, floor space and SKU velocity requirements to integrate best of breed equipment and efficiently blend horizontal and vertical carousels, VLMs (Vertical Lift Modules), pick-to-light flow rack, shelving and rack into one fulfillment system. An entire order fulfillment system can be designed, installed and running your operation in as little as 12 weeks.

Workzones can be easily created and modified to meet changing business demands.

Pick and Pass order fulfillment can eliminate costly lanes of conventional consolidation conveyor, cross belt or tilt tray sorters and the associated floor space. It also slashes labor cost in comparison to manual shelving picking. For greater cost flexibility and simplicity, pick carts can be used during the picking process to eliminate yet more material handling equipment costs.

Orders are downloaded and KardexRemstars inventory management software automatically sorts the wave for workstation assignment and commonality of SKUs amongst orders. Orders with common SKU profiles are grouped into batches. These batches of orders are sent to the workzone for picking to start.

Batches move from workzone to workzone, by-passing zones with no picking requirements. As batches of orders are completed, they are routed to the next required workstation until complete and sent to shipping. Additional bulky or non-integrated workzones can be consolidated in shipping if required.
