Pick & Pass

What:

In this process, individual items for a specific order are picked at a workstation into a container/tote. The order is passed to the next workstation where additional items for the order are picked and placed in the container. At the end of the line, the complete order is ready for shipment. Pick & pass either eliminates or dramatically reduces a facilities need for order consolidation.

Intelligent Pick & Pass methodologies can be designed for an order to skip a workstation if there are no picks for it and go to the next to increase throughput and reduce bottlenecking and buffering requirements.

Where:

The pick & pass strategy is used primarily for an order profile which averages one or two totes per order.

Why:

Pick & Pass can eliminate costly lanes of conventional consolidation conveyor, cross belt or tilt tray sorters and the associated floor space. Automation slashes labor cost in comparison to manual shelving picking. For greater cost flexibility and simplicity, carts can be used during the picking process to eliminate yet more material handling equipment costs.
