What:

An area which items (inventory, maintenance material or spare parts, etc) can be stored and then retrieved, either automatically or manually, and delivered to work stations or operator requiring the item

Where:

Found in most manufacturing and spare parts distribution applications and facilities around the world.

Why:

Each organization must determine whether it is more efficient to have multiple central storage areas based on application such as manufacturing parts, MRO (maintenance repair operations), spare parts, etc or to combine different areas or to use point-of-use storage concept.

The advantages of central storage is a reduction of total inventory since it doesn’t have to be stocked throughout a facility and the ability to have fewer dedicated employees managing inventory. The negatives include wasted walk and fetch time by employees having to get an item, this area can become a bottleneck based on timing of multiple demands and the cost of dedicated storage employees managing the process.
