Point-of-Use Dispensing

Point of Use
What:

Point-of-use dispensing is the retrieval of stored items at the location where the items are used immediately for a process or operation.

Where:

Used extensively in manufacturing applications and in maintenance and repair operations (MRO).

Why:

To eliminate wasted walk and search time to a central storage location and to eliminate labor due to manually operated cribs and storage areas. Items which are used often such as tools and consumables are the most popular types of items for point-of-use storage.

Point-of-use dispensing systems can vary greatly depending on the level of access required for a group of items and the number of items and frequency of their use.

Levels of access can vary from open access to restricted access to controlled access. The difference is the level control a facility wishes to have on the use and consumption of the items. Open access means anyone who needs an item can take it (container of safety glasses available to people as they walk into an area). Controlled access is managing and montoring the use of all items. Restricted access is a physical barrier that makes it impossible for a user to take anything else besides their assigned part.

The major issue of any point-of-use device is floor space consumption and productivity. Drawer systems can be equipped with restricted access controls, but the drawers’ physical limitations (under 4 feet) wastes the entire vertical cube or space above the unit.

KardexKardexRemstar Systems provides up to 85% floor space savings by using vertical cube to the physical ceiling while providing point of use access.
